Bromazolam: Effects, Uses, Risks & Safety Info

Bromazolam: What Is It?

Bromazolam is a designer benzodiazepine that acts on the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system of the brain. GABA is a neurochemical that affects the activity of the nervous system. Agents that modulate this system can slow brain activity and induce sedation.

Unlike approved medicines prescribed for specific medical conditions, bromazolam does not have a recognized, approved therapeutic dosing regimen in the United States. Thus, we have little knowledge of its long-term effects, interactions, and safety.

Furthermore, products sold in unregulated markets may not accurately identify ingredients. That means a person can’t know for sure what’s in a product or how strong it is by reading the label.

Possible Effects of Bromazolam

Bromazolam may produce effects similar to those of CNS depressants. The effects may differ depending on the substance, the amount, a person’s health, and whether other drugs or alcohol are involved.

Potential or reported effects include

  • Sedation, drowsiness
  • Dizziness and loss of coordination.
  • Confusion and decreased awareness
  • Difficulty with memory
  • Faster reaction times
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Speech slurred
  • Lower awareness in extreme situations

Some sedatives may relieve anxiety or cause drowsiness, but that doesn’t mean bromazolam is a safe choice for anxiety or insomnia. Plus, its variable strength can raise the risk of serious injury.

Risks to Health and Possible Side Effects

The dangers of bromazepam do not end with short-term drowsiness. A person can have poor judgment, falls, accidents, and memory loss. Severe poisoning can lead to marked sedation, unconsciousness, and dangerously slow breathing, especially when combined with other depressants such as bromazepam.

Repeated exposure may also result in tolerance and physical dependence and withdrawal symptoms. If people become dependent on a benzodiazepine-type substance, stopping it suddenly can lead to serious complications.

Further uncertainty also comes from unregulated products. Its product may contain some other substance or concentration than expected, and so the effects are difficult to predict.

Drug Interactions that are Hazardous

When bromazepam is taken with alcohol, opioids, sleeping pills, or other sedating drugs, it can increase the risk of life-threatening respiratory depression. These combinations can cause more depression of alertness and breathing than either substance alone would.

Therefore, people should not mix unknown sedatives with alcohol or other drugs. If you are using bromazolam with another depressant and you become unusually sleepy, confused, or have difficulty breathing, get medical help right away.

Signs of a Possible Overdose

An overdose of bromazolam can cause very deep sleep, inability to wake up, very confused thinking, loss of physical coordination, loss of consciousness, and slow or irregular breathing.

If you think there has been an overdose, call emergency services immediately. Do not leave them alone or allow them to drive. If the person is unconscious but breathing, turn them on their side when safe to do so and follow the emergency dispatcher’s instructions. If there is no breathing or if breathing is abnormal, start CPR as the dispatcher instructs. If there is a possible opioid exposure, give naloxone if available. Naloxone does not reverse bromazolam itself, but it may help to reverse an opioid overdose.

**Is Bromazolam Approved for Medical Use?**

Bromazolam is not an FDA-approved drug in the United States. Approved medicines are tested and reviewed by regulators to check their quality, efficacy, dosage, and possible hazards. Bromazolam is not an approved substitute for regular medical care.

Therefore, anyone concerned about their health, for example, with anxiety or insomnia, should consult a qualified healthcare professional. A clinician can then identify the underlying issue and discuss treatments with known safety information.

Summary

Bromazolam is a benzodiazepine research chemical that has been linked to sedation, impaired coordination, memory impairment, dependence, and potentially lethal overdose. Nonmedical uses are especially risky because the composition is uncertain and data on clinical safety are scarce. Risk can also be increased when combined with alcohol, opioids, or other sedatives.
